1 Getting started
This session is for you if you have not used PowerPoint before. It will get you started and prepare you to display a slide show. If you are already a PowerPoint user, you may want to move on to the other sessions, but if you are preparing for ECDL you will need to know the details of this session.
Aims of this session
To enable you to operate PowerPoint, adjust it to suit your own needs, and display a slide-show.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Open and close PowerPoint
- Open an existing presentation and save changes
- Configure your workspace using
- Views
- Personalised menus
- Positioning toolbars
- Displaying toolbars
- Zoom
- Display and navigate through your slide-show
- Hide a slide, and show only selected slides
- Use the Help functions
2 Creating a presentation
Aims of this session
This session introduces the various tools and ready-made templates which PowerPoint provides to assist you in creating your presentation.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Select an appropriate format for slides
- Create a presentation using the AutoContent wizard
- Create a presentation based on an existing presentation
- Create a presentation based on a design template
- Adjust the colours used in a design template
- Create a blank presentation and apply a background colour or fill effect
3 Slide layouts and adding text
Aims of this session
This session introduces the various slide styles which PowerPoint provides, and all the options in formatting text in slides.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Create new slides and select slide layout
- Format fonts size, case, type, style, alignment and colour
- Use undo and redo commands
- Use placeholders and text boxes
- Control Autofit and adjust line spacing
- Add slide notes
- Use the spell-checker
- Change bullet and numbering styles

Pictures, images and objects
Aims of this session
To enable you to enhance your presentation with graphics, and control their size and position on your slides. Also to enable you to create graphs and charts in your presentation.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Insert images
- Manipulate images
- Create and format graphics
- Create and edit an organisation chart
- Insert, manipulate and edit spreadsheets and graphs

Distributing your presentation
Aims of this session
To understand the full range of print options available for preparing handouts and speaker’s notes, and to enable you to prepare your presentation for display and for sending to others.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Use the available print options
- Save to different file formats
- Save your presentation as a slide show
- Save as Pack and Go for users who don’t have PowerPoint
- Alter the default folder for saving presentations
- Alter the properties of your presentation

Aims of this session
To enable you to enhance your presentation by using animation effects on your slides and transition effects between slides.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Select and apply transition effects

Creating and using templates
Aims of this session
To enable you to create and save a presentation style, which you can re-use to create personalised presentations quickly. Also to import presentation content from a document.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Use the master slide to set styles for all slides
- Create a Title master
- Use the Notes master
- Create a template to save your styles
- Use outline view
- Import an outline from Word
