1 Getting started
This session is for you if you have not used Word before. It will get you started and give you an initial look at Word. If you are already a Word user, we suggest you move on to the other sessions.
Aims of this session
To introduce you to Word, and get to know the layout of the screen.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Start Word, and close it down when you are finished
- Create a basic document, insert text in separate paragraphs
- Open an existing document and make amendments
- Save your document, both to hard disk and to a floppy disk in different formats
- Use the help facility
- Change the look of the page layout
- Understand the toolbar icons at the top of the screen
2 Managing text
Aims of this session
To enable you to change the size and look of text, and to select specific pieces of text for alteration.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Select text by highlighting it
- Copy text, delete it, or move it to another location
- Search for specific text and replace words
- Change how the text looks by changing font, size and colour
- Change margins and alignment
- Set different types of tabs
- Apply a border to your document
- Apply bullet points or numbers to lists
3 Styles and templates
Aims of this session
To enable you to change to look of your documents, to give more professional results.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Insert special characters and symbols
- Use existing styles (eg to ensure all your subject headings look the same)
- Insert page numbers
- Add headers and footers (text which prints at the top and bottom of every page)
- Create and use existing document templates (pre-formatted documents)
4 Spelling, grammar and printing
Aims of this session
To enable you to check the accuracy of your documents and print your completed documents.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Check your spelling and amend it if necessary
- Check the grammar used and amend it if necessary
- Choose how the page is printed: portrait or landscape
- See how your document will appear when printed (print preview)
- Choose printing options (whole document or only parts of it)
- Print on your installed printer
5 Tables
Aims of this session
To enable you to work with text arranged in a table format.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Create a table on a blank document, or using existing text
- Change the attributes of parts of the table (borders and shading)
- Insert and delete columns and/or rows
6 Importing pictures and other objects
Aims of this session
To enable you to enhance your documents by using graphics, and to add other file types into your documents.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Add a picture or graphic into a document
- Use autoshapes (pre defined shapes), and change their colour and appearance
- Move pictures or graphics around to place them where you want in the document
- Change the size of the graphic, picture or autoshape
- Import a spreadsheet, chart or graph into your document
7 Mail merge
Aims of this session
To allow you to set up mailing lists and to merge them with pre-prepared documents e.g. to send the same letter to the people on your list.
On completing this session you will be able to
- Create a file for use as a mailing list
- Merge the list with a letter
- Merge the list with address labels
